Beautiful Cinque Terra of the Italian Coast
Ciinque Terra! I’ll be there in May--can’t wait! Cinque Terra is a necklace of five small villages in the province of La Spezia, clinging to the coast of Liguria, Italy in the middle of a National Park and Marine Preserve. In the last few decades it has been “discovered” and become a popular travel destination. A local train line from La Spezia to Genoa connects all five villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. There is also a passenger ferry and a well-taken care of trail connecting the towns.

If you’ve got the legs, I’m told the trails are the way to go. The easilly hikeable amd picturesque path from Riomaggiore to Manarola is called the Via Dell’Amore and winds along the shore. Also easy is the path from Manarola to Corniglia, although the main trail into Corniglia finishes with a climb of 368 stairs. The trail get more difficult from Corniglia to Vernazza. By far the steepest is the section from Vernazza to Monterosso. But this part is worth it as it winds through olive orchards and offers the best view of the bay and the spectacular entrancess to both Monterosso and Vernazza.
In all the villages you’ll find small hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts which offer excellent service and often beautiful views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding hills.
